Video: Preparing Healthy Food In Ten Minutes

Besides listening to audio on my trusty old iPod shuffle, I’m also subscribed to video-podcast feeds. My current PC setup doesn’t like playing video in the latest version of iTunes, which becomes clunkier after every new release. I’m playing with the idea to install a dedicated feed aggregator with podcast support and have the videos being played by Windows Media Player or Real Player. Most podcasters, however use Apple proprietary formats like .mov for their videos. Usually I end up watching the video on Youtube or Google Video because my player doesn’t support the format.

Watching video podcasts is more fun for me and it takes less time. The average video podcast (or vidcast) takes about six to eight minutes to watch, whereas a podcast easily takes thirty minutes. I have been looking in the iTunes podcast directory to find videos about getting healthy and doing fitness, because I have to lose about 16.5 kilos to reach my ideal weight of 83.6 kg / 184.3 lbs. (I would have a BMI of 25 with my height of 183 centimetres or 6 feet with that weight, it still sounds very heavy, but okay).

While googling for video podcasts that cover the topic of health I discovered the “Healthy Catholic” podcast by SQPN. The host is a Roman Catholic priest and SQPN is a Catholic media organisation, so I guess that’s why the podcast is branded “Healthy Catholic”. I think there’s nothing specific “Catholic” about getting healthy or losing weight, I guess the tips work for me as well, so I can call myself a “Healthy Presbyterian” in a year or so. Therefore I just endure the man in the clericals and see what he has to say, the tips so far have been pretty useful for me :) The newest episode they put out is called “The Wok”. The reason why I want to post it here is that they demonstrate that cooking a yummy healthy meal from scratch doesn’t necessarily involve hours of cooking. This can be done in less than 10 minutes. I could give the recipe myself, but showing the episode is much more fun:

I tried it out myself and was really surprised how good it tasted: the starch tip for the chicken is something I definitely will remember. And it went really fast too. I bought pre-cut Chinese vegetable mix  in a bag, fresh garlic, fresh ginger, soy sauce and oyster sauce. I already had the chicken and I decided to cook some rice too, because I’m not really doing well money-wise and vegetables and meat only are so insanely expensive. For me adding the rice was a way to keep costs down. I pay about 3 euros for 10.5 pounds of rice. The meal tastes very good, try it out yourself too!
