Video: Ice Sailing on Lake Zuidlaren

January 9th, 2010 Inge No comments

My brother just sent me this via e-mail, and I thought I’d share it with you all, because it’s awesome. I wish I could have been there and try it out myself. It’s the best use of an old sailing vessel you can think of: put skis under it and sail away!

Flashmob on Groningen’s Main Square During Serious Request

December 22nd, 2009 Inge No comments

seriousrequest Normally I never listen to our national radio stations geared towards younger people, because of the strong, vulgar language used. I never liked that, not now but also when I was a teen myself. Good humour is smart and is not a constant stream of sex-related jokes. That’s stupid. But since 3FM’s fund drive for the Red Cross to combat malaria “Serious Request – 6th Edition Groningen” has landed on Groningen’s Main Square, the “Grote Markt” this year, I take a peek on their website from time to time to find out what happens downtown.
For my international audience I will quickly explain what this is about: Serious Request consists of a glass house put on a big square in one of the Dutch cities and 3 jocks will be locked up in there for six days without food, but they are getting smoothies a couple of times a day. Their job is to play requested music and do everything they can to raise as much money as possible for charity. This is always a project from the International Red Cross and this year’s project is fighting malaria worldwide. So next to playing music, they try to raise the nation’s awareness for the problem of malaria in developing countries.

Yesterday evening the jocks were playing requested music like they always do, but outside on the square something unusual happened: a serious flashmob! It turned out that local dance studios teamed up and made a choreography to Snow Patrol’s “Just say yes”. They had just been waiting until it would turn up and start the flashmob and raised money.
Unless you’ve spent the last years under a rock: a flashmob is a spontaneous act of people dancing and then they merge in the crowd again. Usually this takes place on train stations, but we had one yesterday evening on our main square. Look at the video to see the reaction of the 3FM jocks. It’s in Dutch, so you won’t understand what they are saying, but I think the video says more than one thousand words:

Striped Dolphin in spotted in Antwerp Docks

July 29th, 2009 Inge No comments

It’s a little bit old news, but I came accross this video and thought it was wonderful to have cetaceans like those back in European rivers. Granted, this one probably went astray, but sightings increase. I remember that last year, for the second year in a row, a humpback whale has been sighted near Den Helder in The Netherlands. I kid you not. A humpback whale!
