Smoothies from Hell

Yesterday it was the day a lot of SQPN friends had been looking forward to: the kick off of the SQPN Podcast Marathon. It would start at 12:00pm EDT and things would be a lot easier for Father Roderick if he wouldn’t have to present the first three hours all by himself. Therefore, Mark and I decided to hop over to Amersfoort to do silly things. The plan was straightforward: after Mass, hop on the train to Amersfoort, do some shoppings there and hop on the bus to Father Roderick’s.

The execution of that plan wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped it would be. When I wanted to go to Mass, I discovered I didn’t have the cash for a bus ticket and my “Strippenkaart” (from the National Tariff System) had only one strip left, whereas I needed two to get to the railway station, from where it would be a 10 minute walk to St. Joseph’s Cathedral. I had to walk to the mall to get cash from an ATM, causing me to miss the second bus of the hour as well, but I managed to arrive around 11:30am at the Central Station, where I would wait for Mark.

Together we discovered that our train to Amersfoort only would bring us to Zwolle and that we had to take a detour via Deventer to get there. There was planned maintenance at the railroad tracks scheduled for that day. When I checked the National Railroad Company’s web site, it just planned my trip if nothing was wrong and failed to mention the railroad works. :nunmad:

Later than planned we finally arrived at Father Roderick’s place, where the fun would take place. Go over to www.sqpn.com for more information on SQPN or watch us goof around at Fr.’s ustream page. The finale of our fund raise efforts was the Horror Smoothie Challenge and I embedded the video here. Look and shiver:

It tasted AWFUL. Really REALLY BAD! And I was nauseous for the hours to follow, and so was Father Roderick, I heard later…. But at least we raised $2000. :silas: Congrats to SQPN on MEETING THEIR $10,000 GOAL!!! :wine:

A Convers(at)ion with God, part I

Lights...I can’t repeat often enough how happy I am to be a Catholic. It’s a tremendous joy to be able to live with Jesus like I do now. I feel incredibly blessed! I don’t think this is what people call ‘a first love’, because I converted years ago from being an Atheist to being a Reformed Presbyterian Protestant. That conversion was mainly rational: at one point I had to admit God did exist and that he did send his Son to us to sacrifice Himself so we could be saved. I had to be baptised because to me that was the only thing I could do when I wanted to take myself seriously. I want to practice what I believe, and therefore not being baptised was living a lie. I want to be consistent to what I belief, always. It may sound weird, but I hope you will see why this is an important point in my conversion story.

A podcasting priest

cnmc08 Podcasting is a relatively new phenomenon. Everybody can be the host of their own radio show now, using their own computer with internet connection. It’s as easy as recording an mp3, host it somewhere online, make a feed using feedburner and promote it in the different podcast directories available. In the beginning it was audio only, but nowadays video podcasting, vodcasting is getting popular as well. Video platforms like YouTube enable people to host videos for free and ‘embed’ their content at their own web logs. People can download content to their portable music players and enjoy it during a commute.

You may have heard me complaining about the fact there’s never something interesting to watch on TV or to listen to on the radio, so the whole invention of podcasting has been great for me. I just download stuff I’m interested in and just discard the conventional television and radio stuff. I’m subscribed to a whole bunch of science related feeds, like New Scientist and also to some newscasts. If there’s really a TV show I want to watch, I can do it on demand using the public network’s on demand online video service.
